Hello Bob,
I have found some information for our project about dolphins and I want to share it with you. I am really happy that our project is about these animals.
Bottlenose dolphins are playful and friendly. They can jump as high as 20 feet in the air. They also blow bubbles. Dolphins like to play very much and form friendships that last very long. They like to surf in the waves and swim through self-made bubble rings. They can swim up to 22 miles an hour.
Dolphins can be from 6 to 12 feet long.
Bottlenose dolphins are amazing animals. Each dolphin has a special whistle that it creates soon after it is born. This whistle is used for identification, just like a human’s name. Dolphins also use echolocation. It is the use of reflected sound waves for finding things. When the sounds hit an object in the water, like a fish or rock, they bounce off and come back to the dolphin as echoes.
Echolocation tells the dolphins a lot of things about the object, such as the shape, size, speed, distance, and location of the object.
Here's an interesting story: two dolphins were able to chat...over the telephone! The special call was made in an aquarium in Hawaii, where the mother and its two-year-old baby swam in separate tanks connected by a special underwater audio link. The two dolphins began making sounds.
"It seemed clear that they knew who they were talking to," says Don White, who ran the experiment. "Information was passing back and forth very quickly." But what were they saying?
That's what scientists are trying to find out by studying both wild dolphins and those living in zoos all over the world to understand their secret language. They haven't completely understood the code yet, but they're listening ...and learning.
In many ways, we are just like dolphins that swim in the world's oceans and rivers. Dolphins are mammals, like we are, and must swim to the surface to breathe air. They team up in groups to do tasks. And they're smart.
I hope this information is interesting.
See you soon.
Bye,
Nick
